We found a beergarden outside Donauworth for lunch at just as it started to rain. James and Kieran sampled another radler (from the tap this time) each and we shared schnitzel mit pommes, sausages and sauerkraut and a caprese salad whilst watching the rain and hoping that it would stop by the time we had to get started again. Luckily for us it did and we managed to stay dry.
After lunch James made some route adjustments to avoid more of the slow going on overgrown "bike paths" (note: google maps is not always totally reliable when using it to judge condition of tracks!). So we were on the tarmac and rode through to Rennertshofen, where Gillian managed to come off her bike whilst trying to mount a kerb. No bleeding and her bike was OK so we continued on but she will have some good bruises to show and will be sore when we start tomorrow. It was Gillian's first real taste of road riding today and while she didn't much enjoy the uphill (who does!) she did enjoy the down hill sections - we will consign the crash to the back of our minds.
After a (significantly uphill) detour to try and avoid a moderately busy road, we were relieved to finally ride into Neuburg and find our accommodation which is right across the road from Neuburg Castle. A wander up to the castle and old town area revealed a likely looking place to have dinner, overlooking the cathedral entrance and town square. If we had more time we could spend a whole day looking around - it's really a lovely town. Ice cream finished off the evening, and everyone is now just about ready for bed. James is almost over his tantrum when he realised he left the charger for his watch in Dillingen - this may mean that a little ride video is off the cards, although it may still be possible, we shall see.
Off to Weltenberg Abbey tomorrow which we are all looking forward to.
Relive 'Day 2 - GPS glitches'

Are the straight line sections where you had to turn off the watch to save batteries? Or did you get the power of flight? I imagine if you guys had been ETing your way across the river that would have made it into the blog post though. I can't tell who is writing, which feels odd to me. Are you taking turns or is it the same person every time?
ReplyDeleteJAMES EMMA VICKERS IS CYCLING ALONG THE DANUBE TOO!!! She is the drummer from Nun Habit and you met her at that gig we went to in London earlier this year. She is in Linz and I think headed West so you are likely to cross paths today.
