Ulm to Dillingen

This morning we set finally set off on our big adventure. It was a little sad to say goodbye to our friends the Bundschu's but we have made them promise to come and visit us in Australia.

Kieran particularly enjoyed the wildlife along the Danube and was fascinated to watch a hawk swoop down and grab a sparrow in the grass beside us. We learnt the German words for "Private property" and "Riding is forbidden", and James learnt some lessons about seat-of-the-pants navigation. Later on we learnt that Germans use a different word for motorbike riding, and James spent some time revising his collection of swear words. See if you can see where that happened on the Relive video below...

We stopped at a "Radlertankstelle" for lunch (bike gas station), and had German sausages of course. Kieran had his first taste of German beer - a Radler, which is beer mixed with lemonade. Bit easier to get going again after that than if you had a full strength one...

We spent most of the day riding along Danube flood prevention dikes, which are nice, if a little bumpy. Spotted a nuclear power station and a bunch of fisherman (didn't seem to be any three-eyed fish). Finally, we wound up at the accommodation, which is very nice. Upon checking email, Gillian discovered a message from the accommodation for tomorrow night saying that they were cancelling our booking. We made the booking 4 months ago. But we managed to find another place without too much fuss, in a more convenient location. Now all James has to do is change the mapping trickery to get us to the right place.

The evening saw us ride (sore bums and all) into town (about 3.5 km to the centre of Dillingen), to have a brief look around and a lazy dinner. The highlight must have been the waitress who couldn't understand why we would come to Dillingen from Australia and the look on her face when we said we were on the way to Belgrade by bike... Dinner included schnitzel, spraztl and weissbier to try and be as "authentic" as possible. It's likely to be an early night with another big day planned for tomorrow. Stay tuned for more then!

  1. The video thing is very cool. I saw a big backtrack along the river and then driving through town to come back to the river - I assume this is where the swearing was.

  2. Indeed. Most of the swearing came later when I realised we didn't need to do that at all. Shows the perils of only translating selected parts of the sign using google...
