Prologue

We had a fun day today. Christoph took the day off work and showed us around Ulm. We cycled down the hill into the city and then back - a good test of James' assembly work on the bikes and a nice way to stretch the legs of Gillian and Kieran after the flight over. Not so far really, and just a short preview of the next 4 weeks... The highlight was climbing the cathedral tower - the highest church tower in the world. There were a LOT of stairs. The cathedral itself was also spectacular, and Kieran got his first sighting of the Danube.
We followed this with a walk through the old town, and then a drive out into the countryside to visit a couple of monastaries - also spectacular, but in a completely different vein from the cathedral in the centre of Ulm. The rest of the afternoon was spent with James attempting to limit his swearing as the last of the bike setup was finalised. Who knew that Schwalbe Marathon tyres could be so hard to get on? If Kieran gets a puncture, he'll be on his own!

The final episode of the day was dinner with the Bundschu family, our amazing hosts (featuring a magnum of Cotes du Rhone, bravely taken care of mostly by Christoph, James and the good old days). We were only missing Sebastien - who knew that 15-year-olds prefer to spend time with their girlfriends rather than a bunch of Aussies they've never met before?

As much as we've enjoyed spending time with an old friend (for Gillian and James anyway) and making new ones, tomorrow is the big day and we're excited to start on our adventure down the Danube. Stay tuned!
